VistA and Other 'Open Source' EHR Systems in Kansas & the Great Plains States

The installation and use of 'open source' electronic health record (EHR) systems have continued to spread across Kansas and other states across the U.S.  See the map of healthcare facilities running some variant of the open source VistA electronic health record (EHR) system in Kansas and other states in the Great Plains.

The Great Plains are a broad expanse of flat lands in the U.S. lying west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains. The heart of the Great Plains states include North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, as well as parts of Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.

In the state of Kansas, all of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare facilities are continuing to use the well known, award winning VistA System. VA healthcare facilities using VistA include the following VA hospitals, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes:

• Leavenworth VA Medical Center
• Topeka VA Medical Center
• Chanute VA Clinic
• Emporia VA Clinic
• Ft Scott VA Clinic
• Ft. Dodge VA Clinic
• Garnett VA Clinic
• Hays VA Clinic
• Holton VA Clinic

• Lawrence VA Clinic
• Liberal VA Clinic
• Louisburg-Paola VA Clinic
• Seneca VA Clinic
• Parsons VA Clinic

The following Indian Health Service (IHS) or Native American Tribal healthcare facilities in Kansas are currently using a variant of the VistA system known as RPMS:

• White Cloud IHS Clinic
• Haskell IHS Clinic
• Hunter Health Urban Clinic
• Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribal Clinic

The following are other Federal, State, and local government healthcare facilities in Kansas currently using other derivatives of the VistA system, e.g. CHCS, OpenVistA, vxVistA, WorldVistA.

• Fort Riley Army Community Hospital

• U.S. Army Health Center - Fort Leavenworth

See the map of all healthcare facilities running some variant of the open source VistA electronic health record (EHR) system in Kansas, other states across the U.S., and in other countries around the world. VistA, or one of its derivatives, is one of the most widely used EHR systems in the country.

Other popular 'open source' EHR systems in use across Kansas and the Great Plains include OpenEMR and OpenMRS. It has been estimated that there are more than 5,000 installations of OpenEMR in physician offices and other small healthcare facilities across the U.S. serving more than 30 million patients. Further, conservative estimates by the OpenEMR Organization (OEMR)  indicate that OpenEMR is installed in over 15,000 healthcare facilities around the world, translating into more than 45,000 practitioners using the system serving approximately 90 million patients.  As of 2013, OpenMRS was in use at over 120 facilities in more than 30 countries and had been used to record over 2.5 million patient records around the world. See the map of OpenMRS installations.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) operates over 100 smaller clinics across the U.S. and around the world that use the AHLTA electronic health record (EHR) system that interacts with the CHCS system.  Many of these facilities are in the VistA Installations GIS Map & Database but only major sites are listed in the above table.

Caribbean & Central America

The installation and use of 'open source' electronic health record (EHR) systems have also slowly spread into U.S. Territories and nations across the Caribbean and Central America, e.g. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico.

All of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare facilities in U.S. Territories across the Caribbean are using the well known, award winning VistA System. VA healthcare facilities (i.e. hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes) using VistA include the:

•  U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Finally, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) issued a report in 2010 entitle "Benefits and Costs of Electronic Medical Records: The Experience of Mexico’s Social Security Institute (IMSS)". It provides a summary of the installation of IMSS VistA in 58 hospitals across Mexico and provides many valuable 'lessons learned' from their efforts to adapt VistA to their environment.

• VistA installed in 58 IMSS Hospitals in Mexico

I am still trying to get a more accurate list of all the hospitals in Mexico running VistA to include in the VistA Installations GIS Map & Database. Only a few of the sites have been entered so far.

Check out the map of all healthcare facilities running some variant of the open source VistA electronic health record (EHR) system in New York and other states across the U.S. and around the world.  VistA, or one of its derivatives, is one of the most widely used EHR systems in the U.S.

Several public and private sector organizations in the state of New York are also actively contemplating acquiring and implementing VistA. For example, the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) will be implementing Document Storage Systems (DSS) vxVistA electronic health record (EHR) system in 23 hospitals and 300 clinics across the state. The prime contractor for this enterprise-wide contract is CGI Group Inc.

The NY State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is one of the largest healthcare delivery organizations in the U.S.  During the first phase of the project, vxVistA will be installed in a limited number of OMH hospital facilities. This initial phase will allow OMH to modify vxVistA to produce a customized version of VistA that best meet their specific needs.

OMH plans to leverage several vxVistA integrated solutions that developed by DSS that are specific to behavioral health. These include DSS' Mental Health Suite (vxMHS). This customized version of VistA, called "Empire State VistA", will then be implemented at all remaining OMH hospitals and outpatient clinic facilities.

Other popular 'open source' EHR systems in use across New York include OpenEMR and OpenMRS. It has been estimated that there are more than 5,000 installations of OpenEMR in physician offices and other small healthcare facilities across the U.S. serving more than 30 million patients. As of 2012, OpenMRS was in use at over 100 facilities in more than 30 countries and had been used to record over 2 million patient records around the world.

Stay tuned for updates about VistA implementations in New York and other states across the U.S.
