Check out the map of all healthcare facilities running some variant of the open source VistA electronic health record (EHR) system in New York and other states across the U.S. and around the world.  VistA, or one of its derivatives, is one of the most widely used EHR systems in the U.S.

Several public and private sector organizations in the state of New York are also actively contemplating acquiring and implementing VistA. For example, the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) will be implementing Document Storage Systems (DSS) vxVistA electronic health record (EHR) system in 23 hospitals and 300 clinics across the state. The prime contractor for this enterprise-wide contract is CGI Group Inc.

The NY State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is one of the largest healthcare delivery organizations in the U.S.  During the first phase of the project, vxVistA will be installed in a limited number of OMH hospital facilities. This initial phase will allow OMH to modify vxVistA to produce a customized version of VistA that best meet their specific needs.

OMH plans to leverage several vxVistA integrated solutions that developed by DSS that are specific to behavioral health. These include DSS' Mental Health Suite (vxMHS). This customized version of VistA, called "Empire State VistA", will then be implemented at all remaining OMH hospitals and outpatient clinic facilities.

Other popular 'open source' EHR systems in use across New York include OpenEMR and OpenMRS. It has been estimated that there are more than 5,000 installations of OpenEMR in physician offices and other small healthcare facilities across the U.S. serving more than 30 million patients. As of 2012, OpenMRS was in use at over 100 facilities in more than 30 countries and had been used to record over 2 million patient records around the world.

Stay tuned for updates about VistA implementations in New York and other states across the U.S.
